Five Tips For Great Senior Portraits:

1.  Schedule early.

The best savings are during the early summer months.  If you are in a sport or marching band you will want to make sure to plan early.  If you wait until the end of the season it could be too cold or all the leaves could be gone for outside portraits.

There are great savings for the early summer sessions.  For example:

2.  Make it personal.

What comes to mind when you think about your senior:  a sport,  instrument,  pet, computer, cell phone....  bring those items with you for a more personal portrait.  Accessories and ‘props’ are just as important as clothing selections in an effort to capture the genuine personality of a high school senior.

"Jim and Lois were so nice!  They made the picture experience really fun, and I love the way my pictures turned out!  It was so hard to choose - I liked them all!”                                             Audrey Leech

3.  Start a list of who should receive photographs of your senior.

It will help you with the selection process for the poses, package and the session, you will feel confident that you didn’t forget anyone.

"Jim is really fun, great pictures and poses, great scenery.  Jim will make you come out of your shell”             Courtney Scott

4.  Consider special people to include in the senior portraits.

A mentor, best friends, siblings, group of your best friends, anyone who is important and memorable for your senior.  It could also be a great time to update your family portrait which we can include in the coverage for no additional charge.

"Very creative with poses, props, exposure and lighting.  Lots of time spent, not rushed at all.  It was so fun and I felt comfortable like I could really be myself which was reflected in my pictures.”             Natalie Daumeyer

5.  Make sure your photographer is a professional.

It is difficult to tell who is really going to give you quality portrait photography today.  With the changes in technology there are a great number of people claiming to be "Master Photographers" who just got their camera for Christmas.

There are certainly advantages that come with hiring a "true" professional in any field - and there are ways to make that determination. Here are a few ways pointed specifically toward photography:

1.  Education. Where has the photographer gained knowledge and experience? Self taught? A seminar or work-shop here or there? Or has he/she been formally trained through an accredited school or apprenticeship program? Skills obtained will show the individual's character through the quality of their images, and a proper understanding of technique combined with natural disciplined talent will separate the amateur from the pro.

2.  Control. There is a fine balance in just how much control to exercise in the making of a fine portrait that will stand the test of time. A pro knows just how much to 'adjust' in posing without creating an image that lacks authenticity and spontaneity. A pro has also been trained in the complex area of lighting - how to manipulate (control) light so that it flatters, enhances feeling, and gives an air of reality. (look for areas in a photograph that are "blown out", lacking in detail, "pockets" of light that distract - especially uneven lighting on the subject's face, and a "flatness" that takes away the life like feeling of an image - these are all indications of amateur photography).

3.  Consistency. A professional is always consistent. That is, they will expose their proficiency (or lack of) through delivering high quality imagery to you under any and all circumstances. No matter if you are nervous, anxious, or just uneasy over posing in front of a camera, the real pros can bring you into a relaxed state that allows you to "be yourself" so that your finished senior photographs reveal you in the best light.
